Monticello Theatre & Bank Demolition
Fehn Companies was contracted to demolish the former old downtown Monticello Theatre and the former bank building to make way for a new Walgreens store. Both buildings were multi-level and each of them had their own challenges.
The Theatre and the adjacent building shared the same foundation, so the walls were nearly touching each other. Extreme care had to be taken not to damage the neighboring building.
The bank demolition had its own challenges. There were 2 large bank vaults that had to be removed. The vaults had 18" of poured concrete wall with rebar. A Cat 336 excavator with a hammer attachment was brought in to break them down. The vault doors were salvaged for reuse.
All concrete and bituminous was trucked to Fehn's recycling yard. Fill was then imported to bring the site to grade for a new Walgreens store which is set to open in the summer of 2011.
