PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In 2018, we completed the excavation work for the Nompeng Academy Parking Expansion project located in Brooklyn Center, MN. This project was unique because it featured green aggregate fill to be used for the soil correction below the parking lot. The green aggregate fill consisted of recycled tires that were shredded between 2" and 12" in length by a certified tire recycle center. All of the shredded tires we used for fill under the parking lot were approved by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. Once the recycled tires were delivered to the job, we began spreading and placing them with a dozer, and packed them with a vibratory compactor to get the pieces to interlock and create a permeable subgrade. After all areas were packed, we rolled out fabric across the parking lot and placed two feet of sand over the top to pack the tires to the proposed subgrade we needed. The recycled tires are lower in cost than imported sand and provide a durable and effective subgrade that has proven to meet the standards the project required.
